Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Miami HEAT

Bill Foran graduated from Central Michigan University where he studied physical education and health education. He went on to earn his master's degree in exercise physiology from Michigan State University. Bill joined the HEAT in the club’s first season. In 2007 he began his 20th season with the HEAT where he supervises a combination of weight training, plyometrics, stretching, and dieting to ensure the players’ maximum results on the court.

Prior to coming to the HEAT, Foran spent four years as the head strength and conditioning coach for the University of Miami. There, Foran helped keep players in shape for the championship years of 1987 and 1989. Prior to his tenure at UM, he spent four years in a similar capacity at Washington State University.

Bill is the former president and co-founder of the National Basketball Conditioning Coaches Association (NBCCA) and a published author. As the main author Bill worked along with nine other NBA strength and conditioning coaches to write and publish three books: "Condition the NBA Way", "NBA Power Conditioning", and "Complete Conditioning for Basketball". Foran was also the sole editor of "High Performance Sports Conditioning".

Head of Physical Therapy, Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Founder, Agile Physical Therapy

Marc Guillet holds a master's degree in physical therapy from Columbia University and completed his Athletic Training Certification while working with the UCLA athletic department and while working for two years on rotations of general orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, and cardiac rehabilitation. He is board certified as an Orthopedic Specialist and has lectured and been published in peer reviewed journals in spine and extremity related problems.

After working in the UCLA and Stanford athletic departments, Marc concentrated his focus on working with injured athletes in over 35 different sports. Marc also managed a staff of thirty clinicians at Stanford University Hospital and Clinics.

Director of Performance Enhancement, The Cooper Institute

James Stray-Gundersen received his MD from the Stitch School of Medicine at Loyola University and did his general surgery residency at Loyola University Hospital. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular physiology at the University of Texas’s Health Science Center at Dallas. His accomplishments include work for numerous peer review journals. His research interests center around oxygen transport with specific interests in areas such as adaptation to acute and chronic dynamic exercise, physiology of cross country skiing, and automated assessment of wellness and exercise prescription.

In addition to his work at the The Cooper Institute, a research facility focused on epidemiology, exercise physiology, behavior change, hypertension, children's health issues, obesity, nutrition, aging, and other health issues, James actively consults for UC Berkeley, Nike’s Oregon Project, and the International Skating Union. James has a long history of working with world-class athletic teams and organizations including the US Ski Team, US Cross Country Ski Team, FIFA, and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Sports Medicine

Dr. Amol Saxena joined the Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Sports Medicine Department in 1993. Dr. Saxena received his podiatry degree from the William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago and did his residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Chicago. He is board certified in foot and reconstructive rear foot/ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Dr. Saxena has treated dozens of Olympians (including gold medal winners) and Olympic Trials qualifiers, numerous professional athletes and many top area high school athletes. He has conducted research on chronic ankle pain, Achilles and peroneal tendons, stress fractures, midfoot injuries (Lis Franc) and arthritis of the first metatarsal phalangeal joint (MPJ or big toe joint).

Dr. Saxena serves as a member of the USA Track and Field Sports Medicine medical staff. He is the author of over 50 articles, abstracts and chapters, including several in orthopedic journals, is a frequent lecturer both nationally and internationally, and is a consultant on athletic shoe design for medical and shoe companies.

Head Trainer, Washington Wizards

Eric Waters holds certification as an athletic trainer, strength and conditioning coach, and performance enhancement specialist. He holds a BS in exercise science and BA in psychology from the University of Iowa and a master’s in exercise science from Boise State University.

Prior to his position with the Washington Wizards, Eric was an assistant athletic trainer for the Chicago Bulls. His career has included assistantships with Northwestern University and the University of Iowa. Eric also spent two seasons with NFL Europe working as the head athletic trainer for the London Monarchs and the assistant athletic trainer for the Rhein Fire after an internship with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers in 1997. In 2005, Waters was part of a delegation that visited Beijing, China as part of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders (BWB) program, and in 2006, Waters traveled to Puerto Rico with the BWB delegation.

Former Assistant Secretary of the Army; Colonel USMCR Retired

William "Bill" received his BA, cum laude, from Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs and his law degree from Harvard Law School. He has also participated in executive programs at the Kennedy School and Harvard Business School.

After a tour in Vietnam as a Marine Captain, Bill held leadership positions in the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve, retiring in 1992 as a Colonel. He has served in the White House and the Department of Energy, and he was appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) where he helped spearhead the Army's "Be All You Can Be" campaign. Bill has been a corporate officer in several Fortune 500 companies, has been an angel investor and advisor for several start-up companies, sits on the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, is an avid fundraiser for numerous charities, and is an active member of many business and non-profit boards and committees.
